On February 8, 2018, more than 80 participants including key representatives from education, government, and business communities gathered at the China-BC Networking Reception.

The event was organized by the BC Council for International Education (BCCIE) with support from the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Vancouver, the Government of British Columbia, and the Canada China Business Council (CCBC). BC Studies in China Alumni Network (BCSCAN) members invited local BC students who studied abroad in China.

The successful reception was held against the backdrop of Chinese New Year with remarks from the Chinese Consul General of Vancouver Tong Xiaoling, the Executive Director of BCCIE Dr. Randall Martin, the Assistant Deputy Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology Brian Krieger, and the Vice Chairman of the Canada China Business Council David Fung.

"It is to everyone’s benefit to better utilize and foster the skills and experience of BC students who have returned from studies in China," said Martin. "China will continue to grow in importance in BC’s economic and cultural life and these BC alumni of studies in China will be leaders. It is so important for us to help them establish the governmental, business and educational connections and relationships that will form the basis of our future prosperity."

Erin Williams, an alumna who studied abroad in Shanghai, China in 1991, noted the importance of being in the moment. "When you are in China, remember to take as many photos with your heart and with your mind as you take with your phone."

BCSCAN was launched in 2015 to provide a forum for BC students and alumni that have taken the invaluable decision and opportunity to pursue studies or Co-op in China, on either a short or long term recognized academic program of study.
