Safeguarding Our Communities, Upholding Our Shared Values: A Community Forum on Immigration and Racial Discrimination
On February 22, 2017, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. will be hosting a community forum in partnership with organizations committed to the elimination of racial discrimination in British Columbia, featuring a keynote address by His Excellency Artur Wilczynski, Canada’s Ambassador to Norway.
This forum stands against the recent incidents of racial discrimination towards newcomers and the alarming trend of racially-charged sentiments in the media, and exposes their impact on newcomers, immigrants and long-time residents. Partners, leaders and communities are invited to participate in the reaffirmation of our shared values and acknowledge the historic contribution of immigrants to the prosperity of BC.
The forum contributes to both the City of Vancouver’s pledge of 101 Days of Action Against Discrimination, and BC’s aspiration to be “an inclusive environment for all cultures that celebrates their diversity and refuses to tolerate racism and hatred,” as per Teresa Wat, Minister of International Trade and Minister Responsible for Asia Pacific Strategy and Multiculturalism.
Ambassador Wilczynski’s keynote will be preceded by a panel of experts who will participate in an informed conversation about racial discrimination in our communities, their historic significance, how local communities might foster healing from racism, and the value of immigrants to the province. Following the keynote will be a facilitated call to action to foster integration, inclusion and social sustainability.
