Expanding networks and opportunites for BC’s China-competent alumni

On Feb. 9, 2017, over 50 local BC students who studied abroad in China gathered at the Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver as part of a BC Studies in China Alumni Network (BCSCAN) Reception.

The event was organized by the BC Council for International Education in collaboration with the BC Government and the Consulate General of the People`s Republic of China in Vancouver. This was the fourth reception held through BCSCAN, since the network launched in 2015.

Last week’s event was a great success, with live entertainment in Mandarin, remarks from the Chinese Consul General of Vancouver Liu Fei, the BC Minister of Advanced Education, the Honourable Andrew Wilkinson, and BCCIE’s Executive Director Dr. Randall Martin.

“China is an important partner as part of our International Education Strategy,” said Wilkinson. “Promoting a two-way exchange of students and knowledge benefits both of our post-secondary education sectors. It was a pleasure to meet and listen to the experiences of students who had the opportunity to study another language abroad.”

Consul General Liu Fei added “I think education collaboration between China and BC will continue to expand. There are more and more Chinese students here, and this really benefits the local students.”

BCSCAN member Spencer Brown, who taught cross-cultural communications in China said, “I think we can all agree about the positive impact of globalization and the internationalization of education. My research in China taught me how to enhance my teaching style and better engage with the student body."

Additional background

BCSCAN was launched in 2015 to provide a forum for BC students and alumni that have taken the invaluable decision and opportunity to pursue studies or Co-op in China, on either a short or longer term recognized academic program of study.
