Introduction
In support of BC’s International Education sector, BCCIE is pleased to announce a coordinated Team BC SE Asia Mission this October 7–19, 2015. This initiative follows a successful feasibility mission undertaken earlier this year where relationships were established and strategic linkages pursued with education agents and networks, schools, universities, institutions, and both state and federal agencies. Canadian Embassy and Consular offices were engaged at every stop and are encouraging and supportive of this BC initiative in target markets.
With a population exceeding 600 million, ASEAN nations represent approximately 9% of the global population. Its 10 nation state members are making a concerted effort to create a regional trading bloc that would create the world’s third largest market (after China and India) and that has captured the attention of Canada amongst other trading nations. Of primary interest to the BC education sector are the growing economies and middle classes (aspiring to more and better than indigenous education systems can yet provide) and the large and youthful markets of Vietnam (population 90 million; median age 27), Thailand (77 m; 33.7), Indonesia (250 m: 27.9) and the Philippines (96 m; 22.7). Each in its own way presents opportunity for increased and varied engagement with the BC education sector and for the measured and diverse growth of international student numbers to BC.
BCCIE is building upon past recruitment and engagement efforts forged by the BC education sector in SE Asia by creating a BC Zone at Canada Education Fairs and offering value-added engagement in each city through site visits, the further profiling of BC schools and institutions, strategic partner introductions, information receptions and agent networking sessions. Team BC SE Asia will align with the Canadian Embassy fairs and will allow institutions to participate in other education events taking place in Vietnam and Indonesia.
Partners
BCCIE will be working closely with the Canadian Embassy and Trade Commissioners in different cities to offer exceptional recruitment, partnership building and networking events for all educational sectors participating in the Team BC SE Asia Mission.
Key objectives
- To profile BC schools and institutions
- To create a BC Zone at Canada Education Fairs
- To raise awareness of BC quality education and to increase opportunities for student recruitment in SE Asian countries
- To raise awareness of the great potential for education partnership, exchange, joint research, investment and recruitment between BC and SE Asian countries
- To offer value-added engagement in different cities through site visits, strategic partner introductions, information receptions and agent networking sessions
Proposed value-added events
Canadian Pavilions
In cooperation with Federal Government, BCCIE will choreograph BC branding and a BC Zone within the Imagine Education in Canada Pavilion at the fair sites of Jakarta, Surabaya, Hanoi and HCMC.
Agent Events
Education agent seminars and networking are proposed for BC attendees as interest permits. SE Asian countries are agent-driven markets. A large portion of students use agents to assist in decision making and applications for study overseas. Students and families in these countries place a high value on personal relations, which translates into the need to invest in developing strong relationships that will help meet recruitment goals. BCCIE will work to ensure that BC institutions are afforded meaningful and effective agent networking events and introductions.
Institutional Visits
During its feasibility mission to SE Asia early this year, BCCIE established promising relationships with schools and universities who have expressed strong interest in meeting directly with institutions and schools during the Team BC Mission in the Fall. BCCIE will work to facilitate meetings and to encourage relationships between interested BC institutions and schools and their counter parts in specific markets. BCCIE will schedule institutional visits and meetings with schools in each city.
7th annual BINUS SCHOOL University Fair
Of particular interest to BC’s post-secondary institutions will be the opportunities to establish personal and working-level relationships with selected top universities to encourage partnerships and importantly the flow of students to BC. The Team BC Mission will offer attendees opportunities to learn more and connect with key individuals about how BC institutions can build partnerships to attract these students.
Post-secondary institutions may also be interested in participating along with BCCIE in the 7th annual BINUS SCHOOL Serpong University Fair 2015, which conveniently takes place the day after the October 11 Study in Canada Fair in Jakarta.
For reference, please see the official Binus Serpong invitation and event proposal circulated by Study in Canada Fair organizer Wely Kustono.
