Two scholarship opportunities for Canadian students

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan is currently accepting applications for the following Scholarships:

2021 Undergraduate Scholarship –  for Canadian students who wish to study at a Japanese university.

The Undergraduate Scholarship is aimed at high school graduates, born on or after April 2, 1996. The term of the scholarship is 5 years, beginning in April 2021 (including one year of Japanese language training).

Application deadline: July 10, 2020.

Applicants who successfully pass the written application screening are required to undertake an interview and examinations (as outlined in the application guidelines). Candidate interviews and examinations will be held in August on a date determined by the Consulate General of Japan. Normally, interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan's offices, however due to COVID-19, the process will be announced at a later date.

2021 Research Student Scholarship –  for students who wish to study at Japanese universities as research or post-graduate students.

The Research Student Scholarship is aimed at university graduates, born on or after April 2, 1986. The area of research or post-grad study should be in the same or related field that the applicant has previously studied. Due to COVID-19, the term of the scholarship is only available for 18 months starting October 2021.

Application deadline: July 17, 2020.

Applicants who successfully pass the written application screening are required to undertake an interview and examination (English and Japanese language) to be held in July 2020. Due to COVID-19, the process for the interviews and examinations will be announced at a later date. Normally, interviews and examinations must be conducted in-person at the Consulate General of Japan’s offices. Please note that fluency in Japanese is not necessarily required, but dependent on the nature of the university and study program as selected by the scholarship candidate.

Please be advised that due to COVID-19 measures being taken in Japan and Canada, and the changing nature of the situation, the selection process may be cancelled or scholarship recipients may be unable to travel to Japan in the future, even after the selection of recipients has been announced.

Both scholarships cover:

  1. Full tuition
  2. Monthly allowance
  3. Round-trip flight between Japan and Canada
