BCCIE in Southeast Asia this week to lead Team BC Mission
BCCIE is in Indonesia and Vietnam this week leading the 2015 Team BC Southeast Asia Mission, which goes from October 7 to 19.
The purpose of the Mission is to build upon past recruitment and engagement efforts forged by the BC education sector in Southeast Asia. We are creating a BC Zone at Canada Education Fairs and offering value-added engagement in each city through site visits, the further profiling of BC schools and institutions, strategic partner introductions, information receptions and agent networking sessions.
Team BC SE Asia aligns with the Canadian Embassy fairs and will allow institutions to participate in other education events taking place in Vietnam and Indonesia. Approximately 20 BC institutions both in the K-12 and post-secondary sectors are participating in the Team BC events, helping to profile their schools to interested students.
Feature site visit in Jakarta
This week, BCCIE's Associate Director, External Relations Alan Schroeder was onsite at the private secondary school Sekolah Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia. Sekola Pelita is one of the country's leading high schools. It coordinates a well-organized fair that attracts leading universities from around the world. Students graduate with IB diplomas, and a large number of them seek to study at overseas post-secondary institutions. This school fair attracts a few hundred students from the school's campuses throughout the region. BC was well represented with colleagues from UBC, SFU-FIC and BCCIE.
We would recommend that post-secondary institutions planning visits to Jakarta consider timing their visits to coincide with this and other fairs taking place at leading high schools in the region.
More about the Southeast Asia education market
With a population exceeding 600 million, ASEAN nations represent approximately 9% of the global population. Its 10 nation state members are making a concerted effort to create a regional trading bloc that would create the world’s third largest market (after China and India) and that has captured the attention of Canada amongst other trading nations. Of primary interest to the BC education sector are the growing economies and middle classes (aspiring to more and better than indigenous education systems can yet provide).
