The Hidden Struggle: Building Understanding and Action to Prevent Suicide Among Students
Please note this session will not be recorded.
The transition to studying in a new country can present emotional and psychological challenges which can be amplified by students’ prior experiences of stress, trauma, and oppression. This can impact their academic, social, and emotional well-being. For some students, the overwhelming pain and hopelessness of navigating these challenges can lead to thoughts of suicide.
In Canada, suicide rates among international students have risen in the past five years, with students facing additional pressures including financial strain, academic demands, culture shock, and social isolation. The stigma surrounding suicide further isolates those struggling and can prevent students from seeking the support they need. This webinar aims to break the silence and misconceptions by creating an open dialogue about how suicide can be experienced.
This session will highlight the importance of culturally responsive mental health resources and create understanding of what can contribute to students’ experiences of suicide. Participants will learn how to recognize distress, strategies to engage and support students, and connect them to resources. By increasing awareness, reducing stigma and being equipped with tools, this webinar will help participants create a culture of openness around suicide and provide a supportive presence for students.
