Intercultural Best Practices: Supporting International Students in the Home, Classroom and Beyond
This workshop invites attendees to consider how the increasing cultural diversity in our homes, classrooms and communities requires enhanced communication approaches and strategies. Supporting international students as they acclimatize to a new culture can be challenging and it is important to ensure communication is effective across cultural differences. The first part of this session will provide an overview of trends in International Education with a focus on the development of intercultural competencies, consider cultural norms and student experiences, and allow participants to apply concepts to intercultural dialogues. Presenters will also share best practices and effective approaches for how to support international students in their homestay environments, at school and as they transition from K-12 to post-secondary. The session will include presentations, activities and case discussions. There will be ample opportunities for participants to share their experiences and engage in further dialogue with colleagues and the presenters.
