Developing BC’s Short-Term K-12 Education Programs (Shugaku Ryoko) with Japan
We invite BC’s K-12 education sector (public and independent) to this strategic dialogue as we continue to explore how to best grow and develop BC as a preferred destination for Japan’s Short-Term International Study Tours.
BC’s K-12 education sector is invited to learn more about this strategic dialogue as we explore how to best grow and develop BC as a preferred destination for Japan’s Short-Term International Study Tours, known as Shugaku Ryoko in Japan. This will be our second K-12 Sector meeting as we continue to explore and make actionable decisions to strengthen BC’s engagement in hosting these Short-Term International Study Tours.
Shugaku Ryoko are short-term (usually only one week) tours involving large groups of Japanese students cultural outings, school visits, tourist events, visits to business and industry and sight-seeing. Host schools and districts are not expected to teach but rather to host the students for perhaps one-full or half-day during their week in Canada.
This is an excellent opportunity for cultural exchange between Japanese and BC students with the aim of increasing global competencies that help prepare both BC and Japanese youth to live and thrive in a globalized and diverse world, for partnership development with an important market for growth and for a modest revenue stream.
BCCIE has been working with the Japanese Consulate General in Vancouver, two ministries from the BC Government, the Japan/Canada Tourism Association (JACATA), and tourism marketers from Destination BC to help increase the number and quality of BC’s Short Term International Study Tours for Japanese students. We now invite our colleagues from BC’s K-12 public and independent sector to contribute to this dialogue to help shape how the BC K-12 sector may engage and benefit from this initiative both in the short term and the long term.
Attendees will come away from this roundtable with the following:
- Information about the rationale and opportunities that exist for BC Schools as Japan’s Short-Term International Study Tours increase their engagement in BC
- The direct and indirect benefits for BC Schools in hosting Japan’s Short-Term International Study Tours
- How Japan’s Short-Term International Study Tours work to advance schools’ internationalization efforts by way of partnership development, intercultural learning and student and teacher exchange opportunities
- An understanding of the strategic opportunities to market your school and recruit Japanese students
