BC Post-Secondary Institutions Familiarization Tour for Indonesian Counsellors
In support of BC’s Provincial International Education Strategy, and following a recent BCCIE visit to SE Asia and Indonesia we are delighted to announce that Canadian Education International – Indonesia in partnership with the Embassy of Canada in Jakarta will organize a visit to British Columbia, prepared exclusively for a group of Indonesian guidance counsellors. The group will spend four days in BC, from March 24–27, 2015. We are truly excited for this long-awaited opportunity afforded to the BC post-secondary sector.
The primary objective of the tour is to provide a substantial overview and hands-on experience of BC’s post-secondary education system to a select cohort of Indonesian high-school counsellors. The tour is designed so the counsellors can better advise their professional community and in particular their students of the opportunities and advantages in considering post-secondary education studies in BC.
The group will consist of three Indonesian counsellors from select international schools, including Binus International School and Laurensia High School. The majority of students at these schools will choose to study abroad and so we see this as a positive development for BC schools to more directly engage with students coming from Indonesia.
Background
With population of over 250 million, Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world. Indonesia has by far the largest economy in Southeast Asia, with GDP growing at more than 6% annually in 2010–12, and is expected to reach 6.8% this year. Strong growth in middle-class family becoming the benchmarks to market opportunities, and it is forecasted that Indonesia will continue to have steady and sharp progress in the coming years.
Currently there are approximately 36,000 Indonesian studying overseas, and is expected to increase 20% each year. In 2011, there were over 1,000 students from Indonesia studying in Canada. Additionally, 95% of Indonesians studying abroad are self-funded.
According to a recent study by the British Council, the next decade will welcome an expansive 2.6 million Indonesian students into higher education. Indonesia is listed as one of the top ten countries in terms of student enrolment in higher education by 2035.
