Tūrangawaewae, Pōkai Whenua – a Collaborative Approach to Indigenous Exchange
Tūrangawaewae, Pōkai Whenua (A place to stand, a world to explore) is an Indigenous student exchange program built on kanohi-ki-te-kanohi (face-to-face) relationships established between mana whenua and Indigenous representatives of universities throughout the world. This unique student exchange program was developed by the University of Otago (Otago) to create opportunities for Indigenous students to have international experiences at their partner universities.
In this webinar, we’ll explore Tūrangawaewae, Pōkai Whenua with representatives from the University of British Columbia (UBC). UBC was invited to partner with Otago in 2019 and will share how they’ve collaborated with different Indigenous units on campus to develop this reciprocal initiative. We’ll share how this program adds a new dimension to traditional exchange by introducing students to contemporary life and culture within local Indigenous communities, fostering deeper transnational engagement, and providing fresh perspectives on local and global issues.
Finally, a current student participant from UBC will offer their insights and personal experiences within the program.
