(FULL) Intercultural Best Practices: Supporting International Students in the Home, Classroom and Beyond
This event is now at capacity. We hope to offer a similar workshop in 2016.
This workshop invites attendees to consider how the increasing cultural diversity in our homes, classrooms and communities require different communication approaches and strategies. Supporting international students as they acclimatize to a new culture can be challenging and it is important to ensure conversations are conducted in a culturally sensitive manner. This session will provide an overview of cultural norms and student experiences growing up in one of our key markets. Presenters will also share best practices and effective approaches for how to support international students in their homestay environments, at school and as they transition from K-12 to post-secondary. The session will begin with a presentation followed by small group discussions. The small group discussions will include opportunities for participants to share their experiences and engage in further dialogue with colleagues and the presenters.
Takeaways from the workshop will include:
- Increased understanding of cultural norms and experiences of students growing up in other countries, with a focus on China
- Enhanced communications skills and strategies to support culturally sensitive conversations with international students
- Strategies to support international students in homestay environments and enhanced ability to better support host families to sensitively address problem behaviours
- Increased understanding of how to support international students to build relationships with host families and the community
- Strategies to support international students in the classroom in a culturally sensitive way
- Increased understanding of how to support and prepare K-12 students as they transition into the post-secondary system
