CAPES-Global Program: Partnership Opportunities for Canadian Post-Secondary Institutions

CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior), Brazil’s main government agency for promoting higher education and research development has launched a call to promote the creation of networks between higher education and research institutions in Brazil, with a focus on strengthening Brazil’s role in international partnerships through research and graduate studies. The deadline for applications closes October 30, 2025.

Canadian post-secondary institutions are invited to connect with their partners to explore opportunities to participate in these networks.

Program details:

  • The goal of the CAPES-Global program is to form networks of collaboration between Brazilian institutions (in which there will be one coordinating institution and three to five associated institutions) and international HEIs.
  • The program will foster the creation of cooperation networks among national institutions, at different stages of internationalization, with the objective of promoting, through international collaboration, the development of strategic research and graduate education activities among participating institutions.
  • CAPES will fund $350M BRL ($90M CDN) per year for the next four years. Funding will be available for scholarships, missions and maintenance of international cooperation projects.
  • Networks are expected to be implemented in 2026.

How international institutions can participate:

  • Networks are encouraged to build or consolidate partnerships with foreign institutions with expertise in the themes selected by the networks.
  • Collaboration may include joint research projects, student, faculty and staff mobility, innovation initiatives, extension and capacity-building activities.
  • Agreements will be established between Brazilian and international institutions to define roles, activities and collaboration commitments.
  • Participation can involve hosting Brazilian scholars, researchers or staff, sending visiting researchers and student and cooperate in international projects.
  • Institutions should demonstrate a commitment to inclusion and diversity, promoting equal opportunities while considering the different needs and perspectives of participants.
