GlowEd Influential Women in International Education Award Ceremony and Discussion
Please join Global Women in Education (Glow-ed.com) in honoring Dr Roz Kunin, an economist whose research and presentation brought government attention to the international education sector and influenced on-going support and policy decisions affecting our industry for over two decades.
On October 17, 2022, Glow Ed will present the Influential Women in International Education award to Dr Kunin.
The Influential Women in International Education Award recognizes leaders who have shown significant and innovative leadership in creating international education opportunities in their organizations, made an exceptional contribution beyond their own organization to the internationalization of Canadian education, and advance the profession nationally and internationally.
Dr Kunin will discuss her international education research and the successes and challenges working as a consultant examining the impacts of international student activity in Canada. Following her comments, she will be joined by Ajay Patel, President of Vancouver Community College, to discuss the role of international education in our communities and in our own professional activities.

Award Recipient Biography
Roslyn Kunin
Dr Roslyn Kunin is one of those rare economists who can make the often-difficult subject of economics understandable and even interesting. She was educated in Quebec and Ontario, finishing her studies with a Ph.D. in economics from UBC.
Dr Kunin is chair of the board of the Haida Enterprise Corporation, on the board of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health research and has been a Director of the Business Development Bank of Canada, chair of the Workers Compensation Board of British Columbia and member of the National Statistics Council of Statistics. She has also served as the Chair of the Vancouver Stock Exchange, Governor of the University of British Columbia, as Chair of the Vancouver Crisis Centre, and as Vice President of the YWCA. In her career, Dr Kunin has worked in the private sector, taught at several Canadian university (including Simon Fraser University and UBC) and served twenty years as Regional Economist for the federal government in BC and the Yukon.

Ajay Patel
Ajay Patel is the president and CEO of Vancouver Community College. Born in Fiji, Patel moved to Canada in 1975 at age 6, and was raised and educated in East Vancouver. After completing his Kinesiology studies at what was then known as VCC (Langara Campus), Patel went on to complete bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UBC. He then enjoyed a successful career in the provincial sport sector, serving in administrative roles with the Sport Medicine Council of B.C., Badminton B.C. and Gymnastics B.C., and leading Team B.C. through seven Canada Games (Winter and Summer).
In 2001, President Patel was on faculty and then in administration at Vancouver’s Langara College, first as an instructor and then moving through a series of increasingly senior positions, including Department Chair (Kinesiology), Division Chair (Health Sciences), Dean (International Education), Associate Vice President (International and External Development) and Vice President (External Development). He then accepted a vice presidential role at Vancouver Community College and assumed the role of president in 2019.
