Webinar | The Virtual Mobility Space in Higher Education (eMOVIES): An Alternative to Traditional Student Mobility

The current pandemic crisis jeopardizes traditional patterns of student mobility. As the pandemic continues, we, as international education practitioners, must begin to strategically reinvent our programs, modifying our inbound and outbound mobility models to fit the needs of the current climate and guarantee alternative options to students who are still searching for an international experience. Furthermore, we must ensure Canadian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can maintain and develop strategic partnerships with HEIs outside of Canada during these challenging times.

In order to provide an alternative to its members, Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) has developed and implemented the Virtual Mobility Space in Higher Education (eMOVIES, from its Spanish acronym Espacio de Movilidad Virtual en Educación Superior), with 71 HEIs participants from 12 countries. In this webinar, you will learn about this innovative model and hear from two Canadian institutions about their experiences with the program and best practices they have learned from these experiences.

Presenters

David Julien, Executive Director, Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE)

David Julien currently acts as Secretary General of the Inter-American Organization of Higher Education (OUI-IOHE) and Executive Director of the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE). He owns a Doctorate and a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Sherbrooke and a Bachelor’s degree from University of Laval. David has accumulated 20 years of management experience in three distinct organizations including the IOHE, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and UNESCO where he has been responsible for developing inter-governmental partnerships and different capacity building programs.

Carol Zachs, Director, Global Engagement, Simon Fraser University (SFU)

Carol Zachs serves as Director of Global Engagement at Simon Fraser University and has worked in the field of international education for over 15 years. At SFU, she is responsible for promoting and enhancing SFU’s global engagement through the strategic management of partnerships and initiatives. She also chairs the Virtual Global Learning working group. Prior to joining SFU, Carol oversaw the study and research abroad program at UBC. She has worked abroad in Denmark and volunteered for WUSC/Uniterra in Ghana. She is also co-chair of the International Relations PLC hosted by CBIE. Carol holds a Masters of Education from UBC with a focus on globalization and adult learning.

James Aldridge, Vice-Provost, International, Lakehead University

James Aldridge is Vice-Provost, International, at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He oversees Lakehead’s internationalization strategy and teams responsible for international student recruitment, student services, international relations, study abroad and the English Language Centre. James has worked in the international education sector for 25 years. He was Executive Director, China at Grok Education from 2012 to 2016. Formerly, James was Country Director, China for Canadian Education Centre Network after moving to China in 2006 to represent the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) on student recruitment and partnerships. He holds a B.Sc. from the University of Alberta and an International Executive MBA from Rutgers University.
