Intercultural Summit
Intercultural Summit is hosted by BCCIE and the College of the Rockies.
This summit will bring together faculty, instructors, administrators and student services staff to share and collaborate in a training on best practices when working with a diverse student population. The Intercultural Summit provides an opportunity to discuss scenarios and challenges related to intercultural learning.

Presenters
Kyra Garson
Kyra is a faculty member at Thompson Rivers University who currently works as the coordinator for interculturalization of the campus. She has coordinated TRU’s Interculturalizing the Curriculum faculty professional development program since 2008 which supports faculty to consider how intercultural approaches support inclusive pedagogies. Her research interests include faculty development and the need to revisit pedagogy and curriculum for 21st century learning outcomes. Kyra’s doctoral study entitled “Are We Graduating Global Citizens?” received the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education’s dissertation of the year award in 2014. In 2011 she received the Canadian Bureau for International Education’s Internationalization Award for her work supporting faculty in Interculturalizing curricula. In 2017 she received the Distinguished Leadership award from the British Columbia Council for International Education.
Todd Odgers
Todd is the Associate Dean International at BCIT responsible for the interculturalization of the Institute. Prior to BCIT he was the former Principal of NorQuest College’s Centre for Intercultural Education (CIE) in Edmonton Canada, a center for excellence in the research and development of intercultural resources and approaches used nationally and internationally. Todd has spent his career working in the intercultural intersections of consulting, training, applied research and the interculturalization of higher education. In his new role at BCIT, he will bring the experience and resources learned and earned from his work with faculty, leaders and service staff at institutions across Canada and into the United States. Todd facilitates and speaks widely to groups wanting to improve their effectiveness engaging international and diverse populations. Todd has been faculty at the Queen’s University IETP, taught management to undergraduate students, English for the Workplace and Intercultural Communication in Canada and abroad. For ten of the years between 1988 and 2002 he worked in Japan teaching and training in a wide range of contexts from secondary schools, colleges, universities, factories and corporate boardrooms.
Karima Ramji
Karima is Manager of International Programs at University of Victoria's Co-operative Education Program and Career Services. She has completed extensive work on cultural intelligence as part of the CANEU-COOP program (which won the University of Victoria the 2016 BCCIE Outstanding Program in International Education award). This work has resulted in UVic’s Intercultural Competency Development Curriculum (ICDC) that enables students to be more effective in diverse cultural contexts, thereby enabling them to become world ready citizens. The ICDC has been published in T. Bowen, T. & Drysdale, M.T.B. (Eds.), Work-integrated Learning in the 21st Century: Global Perspectives on the Future, (International Perspectives on Education and Society, V32), Bingley, UK: Emerald Publishing Limited.
Heather Tobe
Heather Tobe is currently a faculty member in the Communications Department at Douglas College. In addition to teaching courses on interpersonal and intercultural communication at Douglas, she presents at conferences and facilitates workshops on intercultural awareness and sensitivity. She has taught in the education sector for over 25 years. Heather holds an MA in Intercultural Relations from Antioch University and the Intercultural Communication Institute. Additionally, she has a Certificate in Workplace Conflict from the Justice Institute of BC. Heather is also a Qualified Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory and the International Conflict Style Inventory by Mitchell Hammer, and the Global Competencies Inventory by Kozai Group. She has also founded or co-founded communities of practice in education and intercultural awareness. Heather has had numerous roles on the executive of the Society of Intercultural Education, Training, and Research (SIETAR BC).
