MARKET OVERVIEW
Serbia, like other ex-Yugoslav republics, is undergoing a major transformation of its educational system in order to align itself with modern requirements and EU standards. Countries in the region are experiencing a rapid development of private universities and the modernization of state-owned institutions of higher education to meet the requirement of the new job market. As a result of the challenging economic situation and a scarcity of challenging jobs in these countries, an increasing number of high school graduates are looking at academic institutions abroad for higher education. The Republic of Serbia has a population of 7,276,604 with 283,000 students enrolled at secondary schools and 268,000 students studying at 116 faculties. Six high schools in Serbia offer classes partly in English and French, and two high schools offer classes fully in English and French. In Serbia alone, there are currently over 37,403 students registering for post-secondary every year totaling over 50,000 in the regional countries sharing the same post-secondary educational market.
As a bilingual country, Canada is well-positioned to offer educational opportunities in both English and French. In Serbia and the surrounding region, Canada is perceived as a safe country offering a top-quality education. After Canada's very successful participation at the Belgrade EDUfair, the Embassy registered a 20% increase in inquiries on studying in Canada, many of which resulted in an increased number of student visa applications.
Transportation to Belgrade
The international airport in Belgrade (www.beg.aero) is situated 15km from the city centre. There are no direct flights from Canada but there are excellent connections through major European hubs such as Frankfurt, Vienna, and Paris.
