Hong Kong represents a vibrant and competitive market for the recruitment of students for international study. Education is a deeply important investment for Hong Kong families, and many parents believe that degrees earned overseas carry greater prestige and will boost the future income earning potential of their children.
Meanwhile, changes taking place within Hong Kong’s local education sector are making opportunities to study overseas even more attractive to local families. The continued shortage of subsidized university seats (only 18% of students can gain a seat), the curriculum reform and the political uncertainty are driving parents and students to explore overseas option. A friendly and welcoming environment, a highly affordable tuition and living costs and the high quality of education are characteristics that appeal to students from Hong Kong and Macao both at the post-secondary and secondary school levels.
Hong Kong was the 18th largest source of international students to Canada in 2014. There are 4 Canada curriculum K-12 schools in Hong Kong and Macao. The quality of the private and public schools in Hong Kong are similar to those in Canada, and in some cases surpass Canada in terms of the quality of the students. It is important to note that with the sizable Canadian community in Hong Kong, it is hard to get a complete picture of the number of international students from Hong Kong in Canada as these statistics do not include the Canadian passport holders who do not require a study visa to study in Canada. In Hong Kong there is a large and influential Diaspora – over 295,000 Canadian passport holders and over 150,000 alumni from Canadian universities and colleges. In essence, Hong Kong is Canada’s 16th largest city!
There are definitely excellent opportunities to recruit not only high quality local students from Hong Kong, but also students who already hold a Canadian passport.

Further to the Brand Use Eligibility Policy jointly established by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) and the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), K-12 schools, post-secondary education institutions and language schools are invited to consult the provincial lists of eligible institutions on the Brand extranet at imagine.cmec.ca/en/zone/. If the institution is on the list, it is eligible to participate in the event. If it is not on the list, it is not eligible to participate unless there is clear and written consent of the province/territory where the institution is located.
In order to avoid processing delays, Canadian brand eligible institutions are requested to register for education promotion events using their business/legal name, as it appears on the respective provincial/territorial brand eligibility list.
Private schools authorized to use the curriculum of a province/territory outside of Canada are eligible to participate in the event as sponsors but will be positioned separately (in a non-branded area).
Banks, airlines and insurance companies offering services to students may participate as sponsors and will be situated in the non-branded area.
Education or immigration agents are not eligible to participate in the event, with the sole exception of agents designated by an eligible institution. In that case, agents are responsible to the institution that engaged their services and must adhere to all event guidelines and agent policy.
