‘Brazil, the Educator’ Opportunities and Trends in Higher Education in Brazil – a Government Perspective
Introduction:
The recently approved National Education Plan sets ambitious targets for the next ten years, including doubling the percentage of school-leavers who enter into Higher Education to 33%. Similarly ambitious targets apply to the technical and vocational education sector.
President, Dilma Rousseff opened her second four-year term with the motto 'Brazil, the Educator', making clear her commitment to the future of education at all levels.
The government has also recognised the need to enhance and strengthen the skillset of graduates to support economic growth. Its flagship programme, Science without Borders, has already given over 80,000 university students the opportunity to study for up to a year in a university outside Brazil as part of their course and the new government has committed to continuing the programme. This exciting initiative is opening up Brazilian academic institutions to international partnerships at a rate never before seen.
The panelist, Israel Gottschalk, is an economic consultant with the Ministry of Education. He will be sharing his insider´s view of the challenges and opportunities facing the HE sector in Brazil and the initiatives which are moving forward as the new government tackles a challenging economic, social and political environment.
