Mobility program development, partnership and relationship management, governance, building adaptive programs, developing strong cross-cultural teams

Abstract

Mobility is a cornerstone experience of any student’s academic journey. However due to circumstances beyond their control, such as income status, disability, and caring responsibilities, many students are unable to access the benefits that mobility offers. While we know short-term mobility benefits students from less advantaged backgrounds (Wake, D, Universities UK, 2018) too many are falling through the cracks.

The Monash Warwick Alliance – a partnership between Monash University and The University of Warwick spanning across Australia, Malaysia and the UK – took up the challenge to change how less advantaged students accessed, completed and benefitted from short-term mobility. Culminating in a one week program at Monash Malaysia campus in July 2019, the Alliance explored how universities can become more inclusive to ensure no student misses out on a mobility opportunity.

Informed from the Alliance’s research, this workshop will offer participants the opportunity to learn how to diversify their exchange offerings with partners and be offered guidance on how to adapt their short-term programs. The workshop will cover four key areas of learning: administrative systems, institutional cultures, governance structures, and staff knowledge. Participants will leave with new skills in inclusive mobility programming, partnership management, and intervention strategy.
