About

The British Columbia Council for International Education (BCCIE) in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Community Colleges (VACC) will co-host a conference in January 2019 in the ancient city of Huế, in central Vietnam. The conference will work upon the strong and long-standing foundation of Canada-Vietnam academic engagement and will advance BCCIE’s and VACC’s existing partnership in order to better serve our respective domestic and international education sectors and benefit students, staff, institutions and communities. The conference will be practical, hands-on and immediate in its stated goal of creating platforms for the introduction or strengthening of bilateral partnerships of mutual benefit.

VACC has committed to inviting its over 60 college sector members, while BCCIE will engage leaders and decision makers from BC’s and Canada’s college, polytechnic, institute and teaching university systems to attend and participate in this inaugural conference.

Thematically, the conference will focus on partnership development between VACC members and BC and Canadian partners. Sub-themes will include topics such as:

  • Quality Assurance Frameworks
  • Institutional Mentorship and the Sharing of Best Practices
  • Articulation Agreements, Joint Programming, Pathways, and Transfer Credit
  • Models for Reciprocal Student Mobility and Recruitment
  • Staff and Faculty Mobility
  • Educational and Administration Leadership

This conference will also introduce and launch a Vietnam-Canada Institutional Partnership Initiative. This institutional mentoring initiative will provide a platform for BC and Canadian colleges and universities to partner with an attending VACC college or university in order to support sustainability and transferability of knowledge, skills and opportunities for collaboration.

The Conference is being co-hosted by BCCIE and VACC and is endorsed by BC Colleges (BCC), the BC Association of Institutes and Universities (BCAIU), Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) and Langara College.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Vietnam-Canada Institutional Partnership Initiative: Institutional Mentoring and Partnership Development

The initiative will provide a platform for attending Canadian colleges, institutes, polytechnics and universities to partner with an attending VACC member college. Well prior to the event, partnership template forms, designed to elicit information from institutions on target areas for international collaboration and support, will be circulated to all Vietnamese and Canadian participating institutions and submitted to the Conference through BCCIE. Institutional matches will be proposed for institutions with like or compatible programming and interests in terms of articulated expertise and need.

Potential ‘partners’ will be introduced prior to the conference and the event will provide networking, speed-dating and meeting opportunities to begin bilateral discussions and advance shared interests.

VENUE, ACCOMMODATION, TRAVEL

The BCCIE and VACC Joint International Education Conference will be held at the Transportation College of Hue, 365 Dien Bien Phu, Huế City, Vietnam. A shuttle to/from the college and conference hotel, Century Riverside Hotel, will be arranged for the conference duration.

Accommodation

The Century Riverside Hotel in Huế’s city centre has been identified as the conference hotel. This is where the conference shuttle will depart from and return to during the conference. For preferred hotel rates and any questions concerning bookings please contact Nguyen Pham, Sales Manager at sm@centuryriversidehue.com. The hotel sits on a spectacular site right on the river, although the rooms may be a bit more modest than some people are accustomed to.

Century Riverside Hotel

In addition to the conference hotel, Huế has a number of other options and luxury or boutique hotels and spas that may be of interest. A couple of hotels that we would recommend are within ten minutes of walking to the conference hotel, including the Hotel Saigon Morin, the Imperial Hotel or the Hotel Indochine Palace, the latter which is a bit further removed from the conference hotel. You would need to make your own hotel bookings at these other options.

Please also note that all of the hotels recommended have extremely proficient concierge desks to assist in sight seeing packages or offering advice on other things such as restaurants, should you have time after or before the conference or are travelling with a person not participating in the conference. Tourism and hospitality programs are a big programming feature of the Vietnamese college sector and it is easy to see their results in action.

Travel

Domestic air routes connect Huế to Hanoi with three (3) flights daily, and Ho Chi Minh City with four (4) flights daily. Travel time is approximately one (1) hour, either from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City airports.

Travellers to Vietnam will need a valid visa. Learn more about the application process here.

Villa Hue Cooking Classes

The Hue College of Tourism (where we will be hosted for our Gala Dinner) holds cooking classes for foreigners, and these might be of interest for an accompanying person or for our delegates should you choose to arrive early or stay on for an additional day.

Classes are taught in English and are two hours in length; they can be conde for individuals or in groups.  You have 6 menu options to choose to cook (each option containing three items), and two options of which are vegetarian.  Prices are modest at about USD $30 per class.  You then get to eat the meal you create.
