Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

With a population exceeding 600 million, ASEAN nations represent approximately 9% of the global population. As a group of countries, the 10-member states of ASEAN represent Canada’s sixth-largest trading partner. Of primary interest to the BC education sector are the growing economies and middle classes (aspiring to more and better than indigenous education systems can yet provide) and the large and youthful markets of the Philippines (population 103 million; median age 24.1); Vietnam (92 m; age 30.4), Indonesia (261 m: age 28). Each in its own way presents opportunities for increased and varied engagement with the BC education sector and for the measured and diverse growth of international student numbers to BC.

Opportunity for growth in partnership development is also at the forefront of the BCCIE and Team BC Mission in SE Asia for Fall 2018. The recent Canada-ASEAN Scholarships for Educational Exchanges and Development (SEED) program and Canada’s membership in the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific consortium provide opportunities for the development of reciprocal institutional collaborations between BC and ASEAN post-secondary institutions.

Partners

BCCIE is working closely with Canadian Embassies, Trade Commissioners, BC Trade & Investment offices, government and non-governmental organizations in each country and city to offer exceptional recruitment, strategic partnership development, networking events and opportunities for all educational sectors participating in the BCCIE and Team BC SE Asia Mission.

Key objectives

  • To profile BC schools and institutions in recruitment and partnership development opportunities
  • To establish a BC Zone at some EduCanada Fairs and a CoWorking space for BC schools in Ho Chi Minh City
  • To raise awareness of BC quality education and to increase opportunities for student recruitment in SE Asian countries
  • To offer value-added engagement in different cities through attendance at EduCanada fairs, agent training, partnership development visits, networking events and opportunities for BC branding and education information.

There is no additional charge to participate in these initiatives, but BC institutions must RSVP for all events.

In addition to this Team BC Mission to SE Asia, BC institutions may be interested in participating in the Study in Canada Fairs. Note: Registration and costs incurred for the EduCanada Fairs and federal government side events are the responsibility of individual institutions and participants.
